A former educator who spent a decade teaching in Arlington is returning to ACS in a top role. Arlington Elementary Principal Tonya Hawkins has selected Katie Nelson as the school’s newest assistant principal. Nelson replaces Janna Turner, who recently announced she’ll be retiring at the end of the semester.

“Mrs. Turner has been a vital part of Arlington Elementary’s administrative team and brought invaluable expertise and knowledge to our school,” Hawkins said. “Mrs. Nelson’s experiences will only compliment what Mrs. Turner brought to AES. Having worked with her before, I know Mrs. Nelson always puts kids first and collaborates well with teachers. Her background in intervention, development of instructional strategies and thinking outside the box will help students improve. She’s bringing a lot to the table and will be a great asset to employees, students and the school as a whole.”

Nelson rejoins the district from the Germantown Municipal School District, where she has taught at Dogwood Elementary since August 2019. In addition to her full-time 3rd grade teaching role at Dogwood, Nelson has also served as a substitute assistant principal, a member of the school Lead Team and grade-level chair. Although she’ll be a new addition to Arlington Elementary, Nelson is no stranger to the Arlington community. For 10 years, she taught and held many leadership roles at Donelson Elementary School, including interim assistant principal, interventionist, teacher mentor, principal advisory team member, and she led professional development sessions.

“I love the Arlington community. I always felt like I could always go anywhere in the district and feel that sense of ‘family,” Nelson said. “I’m really excited to meet the students and families and just be there to help and support the staff in any way that I can. I’m just honored and humbled to come back to Arlington to serve in a different capacity.”

Nelson will officially assume the assistant principal position in January 2022.
